Not every barrel of crude oil or refined product travels by ship. At major hubs with dense pipeline infrastructure — Rotterdam's ARA complex and the US Gulf Coast around Houston chief among them — a significant share of product moves from refinery to terminal, or terminal to terminal, entirely by pipeline. It is the least visible part of the petroleum supply chain, precisely because nothing about it looks like a transaction: no vessel arrives, no Bill of Lading gets signed at a gangway, and the product simply appears, metered rather than gauged, at the other end of the line.

What Pipeline Transfer Actually Involves

A pipeline transfer moves product through a dedicated, permanently connected pipe network rather than a vehicle that has to be loaded, dispatched, and unloaded. Crude oil pipelines typically run from producing fields or import terminals to refineries; product pipelines run from refineries to storage terminals and distribution hubs, sometimes covering hundreds of miles inland. Within a large terminal complex like Rotterdam's ARA (Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp) region, short-haul pipeline connections also link individual tank farms directly to neighbouring refineries and terminals, letting product move between facilities without ever touching a vessel.

This matters commercially because pipeline transfer removes an entire category of cost and risk from a transaction — no freight negotiation, no marine insurance, no weather delay, no vessel demurrage. It also matters physically, because a pipeline can only move product between two points it already connects — unlike a ship, which can, in principle, reach any port with sufficient draft. Pipeline logistics is therefore a story about fixed infrastructure and long-term network position rather than route flexibility.

Batching: How One Pipe Carries Many Products

A single pipeline rarely carries only one product. Major refined-product pipelines move diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and other grades through the same physical pipe in sequence, a practice known as batching. Each batch is scheduled by the pipeline operator, and shippers nominate volumes for specific batch windows in advance, much like nominating a vessel for a loading slot at a marine terminal.

Where two different batches meet inside the pipe, a small transition zone forms where the products briefly mix — commonly called the interface, or the resulting mixed volume, transmix. Pipeline operators divert this interface volume separately rather than letting it contaminate either batch, and depending on which products were adjacent, it is either reprocessed at a refinery or blended into a compatible lower-specification product. Well-managed systems keep this loss to a small, predictable fraction of total throughput, and the cost is typically built into the tariff shippers pay rather than charged as a separate line item.

Custody Transfer Without a Tank to Gauge

Tank storage and marine cargoes are measured by gauging — physically measuring the level and temperature of product in a tank before and after a transfer. A pipeline has no tank to gauge at the transfer point, so custody transfer relies on inline flow metering instead: calibrated meters installed at defined points along the line record the volume passing through in real time.

These meters are independently certified and periodically "proved" — tested against a reference measurement standard to confirm they remain accurate — because a small systematic error compounds significantly across millions of barrels moved over a contract period. The resulting meter ticket is the pipeline equivalent of a Certificate of Quantity, and it is what buyer, seller, and pipeline operator all rely on to settle volumes without ever having a tank gauge report to check against.

Why Terminal Position Matters

Access to pipeline infrastructure is one of the reasons terminal location carries so much commercial weight in petroleum trading.
